第二章 Aesthetics-Appreciation of the Beauty：People in China and western countries have created many unique forms of art, which reveal the inner world of the people, representing their unique sense of aesthetics. They regard aesthetics as a way to enhance the quality of life and to soothe the mind.That’s why we are here right now—to appreciate the beauty by comparing aesthetics between China and the west.The fact is that aesthetics includes so many aspects, such as painting, calligraphy，sculpture etc. But in this chapter, we are going to specifically focus on three aspects—architecture, costume and music.2.1Architecture:Ancient Chinese architecture enjoys a long history and great achievements, which has created many architectural miracles. There are famous old cities, breathtaking imperial tombs, delicate gardens as well as a variety of ordinary houses of natural simplicity.Different styles of western architecture are the expression of aesthetic concepts and image as well as the embodiment of the value and strength.In this part, differences between ancient Chinese architecture and western architecture are explored in terms of external appearance, internal richness as well as building material.
2.2Costume:Traditional Chinese costumes are quite different from western costumes in colour, material, ornamentation, style, concept, dressing etiquette and aesthetic characteristics.But as the centuries passed, the rise and fall of monarchies have overturned dressing styles and inspired new ones. Today the global fashion industry promotes a rapid turnover of styles that cross the national boundaries—a combination of east and west.
2.3Music:Traditional Chinese music has provided entertainment, cultivated people’s mind , helped to govern the country as well as represented spiritual harmony with nature.Western popular music has taken its forms in a range of music genres, from blues, jazz, country, rock, disco to rap with notable figures in different times. Nowadays, both Peking opera and western opera reach beyond geographical and cultural boundaries as one of the most creative performing arts.
