第二章 Tales of Love：Tales of true love are always popular and come in many shapes and sizes. Some are true; others, fiction. Most catch our interest by showing their love in struggling to overcome obstacles in different forms.2.1Opener:Our opener covers two different types of couples who love each other a lot. 2.2Reading & Interacting:This text consists of the correspondence exchanged between a serviceman in the U.S. Army and his wife back home shortly before D-Day during World War II. The correspondence is organized by date. There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the attributive clauses are involved.
2.3Language Focus:On one hand in this section, three differences between all and all of are introduced in details. On the other hand, one sentence pattern of not… until…. is interpreted and exercised afterwards.
2.4Viewing and Listening:In the video clip, Benedict Cumberbatch, a British actor, reads a letter by Chris Barker, a serviceman in North Africa during World War II, to Bessie Moore, his girlfriend. After viewing the video clip for the first time, try to answer the following questions. Then, fill in the blanks with the words or phrases they get from the video clip by listening to it again.
2.5Speaking:In this section, students are required to do an interview of DeRonda Elliott about the letters her parents exchanged during World War II in a group of two people. Before making the interview, watch a video clip of interview and try to get some information and key points concerning the questions and answers of the interview.
2.6Writing:In this section, students, on one hand, are required to work individually on a condolence letter. Suppose they are close friends of the Elliott family. Write a letter of condolence (吊唁) to Pauline on the death of Frank. Before they start, they should study the following tips and sample letter. At the same time, check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a cover letter, which is an application letter or Letter of interest in the business letter format. The cover letter aims to get you an interview, to give the employer an overview of why you’re a good candidate for the job, and to make them want to review your qualifications.
