第五章 Poineers of Flight:A fascination with flight has haunted the dreams of mankind through countless countries. How many people have stood and stared at the marvel of the eagle soaring on hidden currents of air far above the ground? And then, when the sun had set, they saw, beyond the reach of eagles, the endless stars. Our desire to reach for the sky has never left us and can be found in all ages throughout the world, as is clear from the following stories of the pioneers of the flight.5.1Opener:In this section, students are required to watch a video clip about a huge airplane built by Howard Hughes in 1947. Read these questions and discuss with your partner. Then work with your partner and try to answer the questions that follow.
5.2Reading & Interacting:In this section, some information is shared with the students about pioneers of flight. With this article the topic is immediately clear from the title. But what is the point about these pioneers of flight that the author is trying to make? We can take it for granted that they shared a fascination with flight. However, you may find they differ in being widely separated in time and space, while being united in having insights that would eventually be proved useful. They were just ahead of their time. Three inventors separated by time and distance are united by their passion for flight. Their vision and courage helped make mankind’s dream of flying come true.There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the attributive clauses are involved.
5.3Language Focus:On one hand in this section, some collocations about nouns followed by the prepositions are introduced here, such as matter, interest, demand, alternative and effect. On the other hand, the usage of the sentence pattern Legend/Rumor/Word has it that … is interpreted and exercised afterwards.
5.4Viewing and Listening:In this section, you are going to watch a clip from the movie The Aviator, which is about the life of Howard Hughes. In the clip, Hughes was called to testify (作证) before the Senate War Investigating Committee (参议院战争调查委员会) in 1947 over the use of government funds for the Hercules. Watch carefully and fill in the blanks according to what you hear.
