Some cities in America have restaurants where people hope to find more than just good food. A place called Drip opened in New York City in 1996. It started with the idea of having people write down answers to a series of questions about themselves. Other people then read the answers. If someone likes what they read, an employee sets up a date. A business called match.com provides dating services on the Internet. Members can get lists of people around their age who live nearby. Some people identify themselves and even include pictures. The goal is for people to get to know each other through emails. Then, they can decide to meet and date. The business of match.com began in 1995. It says many of its members have married or formed close relationships.

Nothing reveals this more obviously than the amount of public money spent on each student. This has fallen from over £7,500 just over a decade ago to around £4,800 today. The result is that most of today’s students receive no grants to cover living costs, about half must pay something toward their tuition costs, and all face more crowded lecture theaters and less individual time with staff. According to a survey, the top five courses are: business and management studies, computer science, law, psychology, and primary education.
