第四章 Study Abroad：In this unit we shall be looking at studying abroad. Certainly study abroad can be challenging, a you leave behind the comfortably familiar to become a struggler in a new land. Then why go? Well, one good reason is that it will hopefully make us all like one another better and lessen dangerous distrust between nations. Another good reason is that when you come back you will certainly see everything with fresh eyes. Living in other countries not only teaches us about the world beyond our borders. It also teaches us about ourselves.4.1Opener:In this section, students are required to watch a video clip about the about a news report of Chinese students studying in the U.S. Then work with your partner and try to answer the questions that follow.
4.2Reading & Interacting:In this section, some information is shared with the students about studying abroad. The author compared her feeling of missing home to the theme of a historic, classic book the Odyssey---going home and her feeling of being torn by conflicts to the theme of another book the Aeneid. In this way she wanted to show us that life abroad is quite different from that in China and study there is rather difficult for foreign students like her in that she not only had difficulty in listening and speaking, but she could follow the teacher in the class as for the note-taking is concerned. There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the gerunds are involved.
4.3Language Focus:On one hand in this section, some adjectives followed by the infinitive structure are introduced here: afraid, content, disappointed, eager, glad, happy, reluctant, sad, sorry, surprised and willing. On the other hand, the usage of the sentence pattern What better way to do … than to do …/doing … is interpreted and exercised afterwards.
4.4Viewing and Listening:You may wonder what is needed if you want to apply to a foreign university and what Admissions Officers (招生官员) look for in your application. Watch the clips from the movie Legally Blonde, and you may get some tips. Then fill in the blanks in the sentences according to what you have heard. You may want to read all the sentences before viewing. New words and expressions that will appear in the video are explained in Chinese in brackets. In the movie, Elle Woods, a fashion major in college, applied to Harvard Law School and successfully got admitted.
4.5Speaking:In this section, a Chinese student who wishes to study abroad is at a World University Fair. The student visits several booths in order to find out more about the foreign universities he/she is interested in. Work in groups of four people.Each person picks a role. Each Admissions Officer must also pick a university he/she works for. Brainstorm what specific questions the student is going to ask. Then each Admissions Officer searches online to find answers.
4.6Writing:In this section, students, on one hand, are required to write an application letter to Yale University by Yilu Zhao in a Shanghai senior high school. Then, they should present their writing in a group of four to share their writing formats with each other. At the same time, they will have to check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a Letter of Thanks, which is used to express one’s sincere gratitude to the receiver in the common letter format. Moreover, they should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words following the requirements given.
