第五章 The Water Problem:Water is essential for almost every type of human activity. But in many parts of the world, water is becoming a problem, because it is running dry or because it is being polluted. In this unit, we will take a look at how serious the water situation is, how it affects our life, and discuss what we can do about it.5.1Opener:In this section, students are required to watch a video clip about the importance of water for both human use and energy, industry, agriculture as well as livestock and the coming global water crisis.
5.2Reading & Interacting:In this section, some information is shared the students about water shortage, which is likely to be one of the greatest problems for the first half of this century. Yet solving the water problem is not going to happen overnight. It will take time. Nonetheless, there are some things we can start on straight away. As Michael Webber argues, we need aggressive conservation to buy us time before scientists come up with affordable solutions. There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the appositive clauses are involved.
5.3Language Focus:On one hand in this section, some confusable words are introduced here: first and at first; source and resource. On the other hand, the usage of the appositive clause is interpreted and exercised afterwards.
5.4Viewing and Listening:At the beginning of this unit, Students watched a part of the video clip about the coming global water crisis. In this section, students will continue to watch more to see how serious it is, not only in Asia, Africa, but also in America. After viewing the video clip for the first time, students will try to answer the following questions. Then, they will have to fill in the blanks with the words or phrases the get from the video clip by listening to it again.
5.5Speaking:In this section, students are required to do an on-the-spot inquiry on the quality of water in a group of two people. Before making the inquiry, watch a video clip of inquiring about water and try to get some information and key points concerning the questions and answers of the interview.
5.6Writing:In this section, students, on one hand, are required to work individually on a paragraph about “Clean Water Conservation”. Then, they should present their writing in a group of four to share their solutions to the problem of “Clean Water Conservation” with each other. Compare the four people’s descriptions of problems and methods of solving water pollution. At the same time, they will have to check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a CET-4 essay on the topic in agreement with the type of Narration. Moreover, they should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words following the requirements given.
