第一章 The Pursuit of Dreams:We all have dreams as we grow up. The pursuit of dreams leads us to do things out of the ordinary. Yet dreams alone are not enough, for it takes a lot of determination and hard work to make them come true. This can be seen in the perseverance of the heroes of the true stories in this unit.1.1Opener:There is a brief introduction to a prominent Chinese scientist, Mr. Qian Xuesen in this section, such as his backgrounds, his education, his dreams, his achievements as well as his secrets to success.
1.2Reading & Interacting:There is a true story of a deaf music DJ, Robbie Wilde, who lost his hearing at the age of 5 because of illness, but tried his best to fulfill the impossible task ---becoming a music DJ. As for his success, he has had a background of music---his father is a DJ, and he has a wonderful tutor--- a famous New York DJ. Most important of all, he has passion for music and perseverance for dream. There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the attributive clauses are involved.
1.3Language Focus:On one hand in this section, 8 types of word formation are introduced here: Derivation, Compounding, Conversion, Acronym, Abbreviation, Blending, Onomatopoeia and Loan words. On the other hand, two sentence patterns of how about… and why not…are interpreted and exercised afterwards.
1.4Viewing and Listening:As we learn from the Text, Robbie has lost most of his hearing but is determined to be a DJ. In this section, Students are required to view a short video about him and focus only on what he has to say in response to the three questions listed below. Then, they will have to fill in the blanks with the words or phrases they get from the video clip by listening to it again.
1.5Speaking:In this section, students are required to do an interview on the Chinese Dream in a group of two people. Before making the interview, watch a video clip of interviewing Robbie Wilde and try to get some information and key points concerning the questions and answers of the interview.
1.6Writing:In this section, students, on one hand, are required to work individually on a paragraph about “My Dream Job”. Then, they need to present their writing in a group of four to share dream jobs with each other. Compare the four people’s descriptions of obstacles and ways of achieving dreams. At the same time, check and fix grammar mistakes for each other. While doing their writing, students will have to pay special attention to the use of tenses.On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a CET-4 essay on the topic in agreement with the type of contrast and selection. Moreover, they should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words following the requirements given.
