We will meet two prominent statesmen in the world in this unit, they are : Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela.
4.2Reading & Interacting:This text was written by the editor-in-chief of the world’s top academic journal and published as an editorial. An editorial in an English newspaper or magazine is an article that essentially expresses the strong opinion of the editorial board on an issue. This editorial gives an account of the writer’s meeting with Premier Li Keqiang of China and comments favorably on the Premier’s efforts to promote science for the country’s development and to support the education of future scientists. There are also some difficult sentences explained and analyzed in this section, where the usage of the expression as to is involved.
4.3Language Focus:There are roughly three types to express multiplication in English :by times ;by fractions and percentages;by the words again (double), double (double), triple (triple), fourfold (quadruple).Besides,two sentence patterns of as to and…rather…are interpreted and exercised afterwards.
4.4Viewing and Listening:Extensive reading 1 in your book records Oprah Winfrey’s second interview with Nelson Mandela. Now you are going to watch a video clip of her first interview with him in 2000. Fill in the blanks according to what you hear.
4.5Speaking:In this section, students are required to do an interview on the news story of President Xi Jinping buying lunch at the Qingfeng Steamed Dumpling Shop on December 28, 2013. Before making the interview, watch a live report in the video clip and try to get some information and key points ,and then work in groups of four or five classmates and each person picks a role in the video clip. Finally role-play the interview.
4.6Writing:In this section, on one hand, students are required to write a composition entitled A Statesman You Like.It might include the following points: the name of the statesman; his/her past experience; how did this experience impact his/her career path later. On the other hand, students are allowed 30 minutes to write a CET-4 essay on the topic How I Finance My College Education in agreement with the type of problem and solution.
